Social media has become the most important source of political information for many people. In this seminar, we will explore the effects of this information environment on citizens’ perceptions and political attitudes. After reading some classic texts on media influence, we will turn to more recent analyses of the impact of social media, examining topics such as media selection, echo chambers, platform algorithms, the influence of misinformation, and AI-generated content.In the second part of the seminar, we will address the challenges of empirically analyzing media influence using various datasets (cross-sectional and panel data). In this section, you will also have the opportunity to empirically test your own research ideas.
