Political communication lies at the heart of democratic politics, shaping how political actors, the media, and citizens interact with one another. This seminar examines different forms of political communication and their role in contemporary democracies. On the one hand, we will explore how politicians, parties, and political institutions seek to present themselves, communicate their policy positions, and persuade citizens. On the other hand, we will investigate how citizens, interest groups, and social movements attempt to influence political discourse, express their preferences, and hold political leaders accountable.Drawing on a range of theoretical perspectives and empirical studies, the seminar addresses key questions about the consequences of political communication. How do political messages shape public opinion and political behavior? Under what conditions are citizens persuaded by political campaigns, media coverage, or online content? How do communication strategies influence voting behavior?
Particular attention will be paid to the changing media environment and the growing importance of digital communication. We will discuss the respective roles of traditional media, such as newspapers and television, and social media platforms in structuring political debate and disseminating information. Topics include political campaigns, media effects, misinformation and disinformation, selective exposure, political polarization, and the emergence of new forms of citizen engagement in the digital age.
