In both research and teaching, we integrate theoretical perspectives from political science with advanced empirical methods. The goal is to enhance the understanding of democratic processes, the formation and change of political attitudes, and patterns of electoral behavior. Our work examines both citizens and political actors, including parties, coalitions, and individual politicians. To investigate these research objects, we primarily employ quantitative methods like survey data, experiments, and panel analyses.

<div class="wp-block-column is-layout-flow Fabio Best’s doctoral dissertation examines the political consequences of such crises, focusing in particular on the impact of political crises on people’s voting decisions in Germany. Particular attention is paid to the stability of the bonds between parties and voters and how the traditional steering effect of party identification on downstream attitudes and behavior changes in times of political crisis.

</jgu-base-accordionitem>

<jgu-base-accordionitem react-props="{"title":"Perceptions of Economic Inequality - Origins and Effects on Democracy-Supporting Attitudes","init":false,"slug":"strongperceptions-of-economic-inequality-origins-and-effects-on-democracy-supporting-attitudes-strong","align":"wide","customSlug":false}">

Doctoral dissertation project: Lion Merten, M.A.

For a long time, theoretical arguments and empirical analyses of the consequences of economic inequality were dominated by objective indicators such as the GINI coefficient. However, more recent research shows that it is not so much the objective reality as its perception that is decisive for political attitudes and behaviors. In his doctoral dissertation, Lion Merten examines how people perceive economic inequality, what factors influence these perceptions, and what consequences arise for attitudes and behaviors that are considered to be supportive of democracy. In addition to cross-sectional data, experimental designs are used in which the perception of the respondents is specifically influenced.

</jgu-base-accordionitem>

<jgu-base-accordionitem react-props="{"title":"Between Ideology and Governability: Determinants of Coalition Preferences in Germany","init":false,"slug":"strongbetween-ideology-and-governability-determinants-of-coalition-preferences-in-germany-strong","align":"wide","customSlug":false}">

Doctoral dissertation project: Robert Welz, M.A.

While coalition governments constitute the central arena of political decision-making in many democracies, relatively little is known about how citizens evaluate coalitions and what factors shape these coalition preferences. Previous studies suggest that both policy-related and non-policy factors such as the perceived effectiveness of a coalition play a role. However, existing theoretical frameworks are often fragmented, empirical findings are frequently based on single-case studies, and experimental designs to test causal relationships remain scarce.

This dissertation project addresses these research gaps by developing and applying a comprehensive theoretical model of the determinants of coalition preferences. At its core, the project investigates whether and how citizens in multiparty systems (particularly under conditions of limited information) arrive at stable and reasoned evaluations of potential coalitions. The theoretical framework combines spatial and valence theories from electoral and attitude research. In addition, the concept of heuristics is incorporated to explain how citizens form judgments even in complex informational environments by relying on cognitive shortcuts. Beyond ideological proximity, particular coalition characteristics play a crucial role in shaping expectations about a perceptions of a coalition’s governing competence. These include, for example, the number of parties involved, past cooperation among coalition partners, and whether the coalition holds a parliamentary majority.

To empirically test the theoretical assumptions, both experimental and survey data are analyzed. The survey data cover all state elections in Germany since 1990, enabling a systematic analysis across a wide range of elections and over time. In addition, current survey data related to federal elections are examined. To identify causal effects of specific coalition characteristics on citizens’ preferences, survey experiments are employed.

</jgu-base-accordionitem>

</jgu-base-accordion>

</jgu-base-section>

<jgu-base-section react-props="{"color":"white","align":"wide","padding":"medium"}">

<jgu-base-heading react-props="{
    "index": "Teaching",
    "tags": {
        "htmlTag": "h2",
        "classTag": "",
        "tag": "h2"
    },
    "heading": "Courses",
    "className": "alignwide",
    "textAlign": "left",
    "anchor": "",
    "color": "red"
}"></jgu-base-heading>

<jgu-base-alertbox react-props="{
    "image": {
        "id": null,
        "url": null,
        "credit": ""
    },
    "headline": "The Empirical Political Research unit offers courses in the following degree programs:",
    "subline": "Political Science (Bachelor of Arts)
Social Studies (Bachelor/Master of Education)
Political and Democracy Research (Master of Arts)
Political Economy and International Relations (Master of Arts)
European Studies (Master of Arts)

Information about the respective degree programs can be found under this <a href=\\"https://politik.uni-mainz.de/startseite-institut-fuer-politikwissenschaft/studierende/\\">link to the degree program information.",
    "headlineColor": "dark",
    "children": "",
    "icon": "",
    "iconOverHeadline": false,
    "isPreview": false
}">

</jgu-base-alertbox>

<jgu-base-collapsiblearea class="is-layout-flow wp-block-jgu-collapsible-area-is-layout-flow" react-props="{"visibleLines":10,"collapse":"always","collapsedHeight":150,"content":"
<jgu-base-alertbox react-props=\\"{
    "headline": "<strong>E-Learning</strong><br>",
    "children": "The lectures and small group sessions “Statistics I” and “Statistics II” are a core part of the teaching program in the Empirical Political Research unit. Of course, we also supervise theses based on your own topic proposals, provided they align thematically with our areas of focus.. <strong>If you have an initial idea for a topic or are looking for support in narrowing down a topic, please feel free to contact us for a consultation hour appointment.</strong><br> <br>We welcome students who would like to carry out their own empirical analyses as part of their bachelor's thesis. It is also possible to collect your own data as part of a bachelor's thesis with us. This enables you to work on new and innovative questions that cannot (yet) be investigated with existing datasets. If this fits your research project and is desired by you, we will be happy to support you in the supervision of your work, for example with an introduction to survey software and the recruitment of participants. <br>However, your own empirical analysis is not a prerequisite. We also supervise theoretical-conceptual or systematic literature reviews, provided that they fit the research profile of the research unit. <br> <br>Please plan in good time: You have 8 weeks to complete your bachelor's thesis in the B.A. program of study.

<!-- wp:jgu/alertbox {"headline":"E-Learning
","children":"The lectures and small group sessions “Statistics I” and “Statistics II” are a core part of the teaching program in the Empirical Political Research unit.
However, your own empirical analysis is not a prerequisite. We also supervise theoretical-conceptual or systematic literature reviews, provided that they fit the research profile of the research unit.

Please plan in good time: You have 8 weeks to complete your bachelor's thesis in the B.A. program of study. The correction time is usually 4–6 weeks.
